FPS is the genre this gen... and it's very sad that it had to come to that.

That wasn't the question soaringdive, it was if "2d gaming became it's own genre this year?"

as it become its own genre... no its not a genre its just a desine style. games like megaman 9, nsmbwii, are platformers not 2ders. and little big planet is more 2 and a half D because u can change planes making have 3d elements in a 2d game.

2D isn't a Genre, its a design.

It just happen to be less 2D game design in the last generation (a significant drop), with the exception of the Gameboy Advance.

iion FPs took gaming by store but in all fairness an FPS is an FPS now adventure games. They can be oh so much more. To me adventure games are the best but there are not enough of them

Side-scrolling genre is the name when something 3D goes 2D. 2D is more like Sprites you find on games like Sonic the Hedgehog 3 or Super Mario World.

The term side-scrolling has existed far before 3D. Side-Scrolling has to do with the ability to change the screen. This in contrast to Single Screen level games. Here is a comparison.

Single Screen Level
PacMan
Mario Bros.
Space Invaders

Scrolling Level
Gauntlet
Super Mario Bros.
Legendary Wings

Most of the games you said was just sidescrollers. NSMBWii and LittleBig Planet are 3D sidescrollers.
